OpenAI is reportedly building a way for businesses to claim their listing in ChatGPT and see how often they are mentioned and clicked. The report comes from Search Engine Roundtable, which covered a LinkedIn post by Juozas Kaziukėnas. The 6 November report describes a work in progress and cites no OpenAI announcement, so for now our recommendation is this: make your site easy for AI tools to read and quote, start tracking a set of prompts, and get your business details ready to verify.
What is "Claim your business in ChatGPT"?
Search Engine Roundtable reports that OpenAI is developing a Search Console- or Webmaster Tools-like tool for businesses to manage and track their presence in ChatGPT. The screenshot Kaziukėnas shared carries the line "Claim your business in ChatGPT", and he described it as part of a larger feature called Business Hub.
Based on that reporting, a business that claims its listing would be able to:
- See how it shows up. Track how often the business is mentioned in ChatGPT conversations.
- Show customers what it offers. Add its latest products and keep business information up to date.
- Help customers decide. Let a business agent answer customer questions, using context the business controls.
Kaziukėnas also reported that it would only be open to businesses that have verified their ownership, and he gave connecting a Shopify store as one example.
Treat all of this as reported, not confirmed. It comes from one person's screenshot and LinkedIn post, written up by Search Engine Roundtable. The supplied report cites no OpenAI announcement.
Has it launched, and can Australian businesses use it?
Not as of the report. Kaziukėnas described the feature as a work in progress and said he first saw early versions in August. He also mentioned a banner suggesting it may be nearing release, but the reporting gives no launch date.
The reporting also says nothing about which countries will get it, what it might cost or who will qualify beyond verified owners. The report does not establish that Australian businesses can sign up. If someone offers to "claim your ChatGPT listing" for you right now, ask them exactly what they would be claiming.
What it will and won't show you
As reported, the analytics side measures two things:
- Impressions: how many times your business appeared in ChatGPT responses.
- Clicks: how many times people clicked links through to your website.
Both are reportedly tracked daily and shown as a chart.
According to Kaziukėnas, it does not show prompt data, user data, or any kind of competitor benchmark or ranking. He was direct about that limit: "So it won't help understanding why mentions/clicks are increasing or decreasing."
Those counts would show whether your mentions and clicks went up or down, but not explain why. It would not tell you which questions triggered them, who asked, or how you compare with the business down the road.
Is it the same as ChatGPT ads?
According to Search Engine Roundtable, it appears to be separate from ChatGPT ads and aimed at organic ChatGPT responses.
What we'd do now: AEO basics
This section and the two after it are our recommendations, not features of the reported tool.
Our starting point for answer engine optimisation, or AEO, is to make business information accessible and easy to understand. If the term is new to you, our explainers on AEO vs SEO and GEO vs SEO cover the differences.
The basics we'd check first:
- Crawlable. Make sure your robots.txt and any firewall or bot protection aren't blocking the crawlers that AI search tools use.
- Indexed. Check whether Google and Bing can index your key pages. Treat this as a search visibility check, not a confirmed requirement for ChatGPT mentions.
- Clear, quotable answers. Put a plain answer to the question near the top of the page, in a sentence or two that could be lifted out and still make sense.
- Consistent facts. Your name, location, services, products and policies should say the same thing on your site, your profiles and your marketplace listings.
We cover the detail, engine by engine, in our guide to ChatGPT SEO and getting cited in AI answers. If you want to see how this plays out in Australian search, our study of AI Overviews in Australian search has the data and method.
None of this guarantees a mention, a citation or a click. It just makes your pages easier to read and quote when an AI tool goes looking.
How to track prompts before it launches
You don't have to wait for Business Hub to start measuring. There are two useful sources of data today.
Prompt tracking tools. This category of software runs a set of prompts you choose through AI tools on a schedule and records whether your business appears in the answers. That's useful for spotting trends on the questions you care about. Know its limits, though. A tracker samples the prompts you pick. It doesn't cover the full range of real ChatGPT conversations, and it can't see what actual users typed.
AI referrals in GA4. Visits that arrive from ChatGPT and other AI tools can often be separated out in Google Analytics 4, which gives you a first-party view of the traffic that actually reached your site. Our AI search guide explains how to set this up. If your tracking is messy, our GA4 and Google Tag Manager consultants can tidy it up.
If Business Hub arrives as reported, it would fill the gap between these two: sampled prompt-level visibility from a tracker, plus first-party mention and click counts from ChatGPT itself. Kaziukėnas made the same point, saying that combined with external prompt trackers it would show "accurate first-party data if GEO/AEO strategies are working".
A simple setup for now:
- Write a short list of the questions your customers actually ask, in their words.
- Run them through a prompt tracker, or check them by hand on a regular schedule.
- Record AI referrals in GA4 so you have your own baseline before anything new ships.
Getting ready to claim
The supplied reporting does not establish the full claiming process or eligibility rules. These are our preparation recommendations, not confirmed requirements.
- Tidy your business information. Check that your name, address, phone, opening hours, service areas and descriptions match across your website and your main profiles.
- Keep product data current. The reporting says businesses would be able to add their latest products. Clean, accurate product titles, descriptions, prices and stock on your own site are worth having regardless. If you sell online, our ecommerce marketing team works on exactly this.
- Know who controls your accounts. Ownership verification reportedly applies, and connecting a Shopify store was given as one example. Make sure you know who holds the admin logins for your website, domain, ecommerce platform and analytics, and that those people can be reached. Shopify was only an example, and the verification method hasn't been confirmed.
- Write down the answers you'd want an agent to give. The reported business agent would answer customer questions using context you control. Get your shipping, returns, pricing approach, service areas and common questions written up clearly on your site now.
None of this guarantees you'll be eligible or mentioned. It means that if the feature does arrive, you won't be scrambling to find logins or fix contradictory information.

Frequently asked questions
Can I claim my business in ChatGPT yet?
Not as of the report. According to Search Engine Roundtable's report of Kaziukėnas's post, the feature is still a work in progress. The supplied report gives no confirmed launch date or regions and describes ownership verification without full eligibility rules.
What will ChatGPT's business analytics show?
As reported, it would show impressions (how often your business appeared in ChatGPT responses) and clicks to your website, tracked daily and displayed as a chart. It reportedly won't show prompts, user data or competitor benchmarks.
Will claiming my business get me mentioned more in ChatGPT?
Nothing in the reporting says so. Claiming is described as a way to see your mentions, update your information and products, and set up a business agent. It isn't described as a way to rank higher or get mentioned more often.
Do I need a Shopify store to claim my business?
The report does not establish that Shopify is required. Kaziukėnas said the feature is for businesses that have verified ownership and gave connecting a Shopify store as one example. How verification will actually work hasn't been confirmed.
Is this ChatGPT advertising?
According to Search Engine Roundtable, it appears to be separate from ChatGPT ads and focused on organic responses.
How can I see if ChatGPT mentions my business today?
Ask ChatGPT the questions your customers ask and note whether you appear, or use a prompt tracking tool to check a set of prompts on a schedule. Remember that both approaches only sample prompts you choose and can't see real user conversations. Pair them with AI referral reporting in GA4 to see the visits that actually reach your site.
