The range is for Meta. Google, LinkedIn and TikTok price impressions differently.

Worked examples

How do you calculate CPM, cost and impressions?

Each one is the same formula turned around. CPM is cost ÷ impressions × 1,000, so cost and impressions follow from any two of the three.

  1. CPM · A campaign cost $2,500 and was shown 180,000 times. CPM = $2,500 ÷ 180,000 × 1,000 = $13.89.
  2. Impressions · A $5,000 budget at a $12.50 CPM buys $5,000 ÷ $12.50 × 1,000 = 400,000 impressions.
  3. Cost · 300,000 impressions at a $20 CPM cost $20 × 300,000 ÷ 1,000 = $6,000.

Australian context

What is a normal CPM in Australia?

For broad consumer audiences on Meta, our Facebook ads cost guide puts CPMs at roughly $8 to $25. Narrow B2B and finance audiences can run well past that, and CPMs rise when more advertisers chase the same people, when the audience is small, and in seasonal peaks such as the run into Christmas and the end of the financial year.

The spread matters for planning. The same budget buys roughly three times as many impressions at the bottom of the range as at the top.

Impressions = budget ÷ CPM × 1,000. CPM range: broad consumer audiences on Meta in Australia, from the Profit Geeks Facebook ads cost guide (2026).

Beyond CPM

How does CPM turn into cost per click and cost per sale?

Divide the CPM by the clicks you get from 1,000 impressions to get cost per click, then divide that by your conversion rate to get cost per sale.

Cost per click = CPM ÷ (click-through rate × 1,000).

Cost per sale = cost per click ÷ conversion rate.

With example numbers, not benchmarks: a $15 CPM and a 1 percent click-through rate give 10 clicks per 1,000 impressions, so each click costs $15 ÷ 10 = $1.50. At a 3 percent conversion rate, each sale costs $1.50 ÷ 0.03 = $50.

That is why a cheap CPM can still mean an expensive customer. Halve the click-through rate and the cost per sale doubles, whatever the CPM. The conversion rate calculator and the CAC calculator cover the next two steps.

Frequently asked

Five questions about CPM.

What is CPM and how do you calculate it?

CPM is the cost per 1,000 impressions of an ad; the M is mille, Latin for thousand. Divide the cost by the number of impressions and multiply by 1,000. A campaign that cost $2,500 and was shown 180,000 times has a CPM of $2,500 ÷ 180,000 × 1,000 = $13.89.

How much does CPM cost per 1,000 views?

CPM is the price of 1,000 impressions, so the cost per 1,000 is the CPM itself. Our Facebook ads cost guide puts broad consumer audiences on Meta in Australia at roughly $8 to $25 per 1,000 impressions. An impression counts each time the ad is shown, which is not the same as a video view; some video ads are bought per view instead.

What does a $7 CPM mean?

You pay $7 for every 1,000 times the ad is shown, which is 0.7 cents per impression. A $1,000 budget at a $7 CPM buys about 142,857 impressions.

Is $8 CPM good?

For a broad consumer audience on Meta in Australia, $8 sits at the bottom of the $8 to $25 range in our Facebook ads cost guide, so it is cheap reach. Whether it is good depends on what follows: a cheap impression that nobody clicks, or that reaches people who will not buy, can cost more per sale than a dearer one that converts.

What is a good CPM?

One that produces customers at a cost per acquisition you can afford. As a sense check, broad consumer audiences on Meta in Australia commonly run $8 to $25, while narrow B2B or finance audiences can run well above that. Compare CPMs within one platform and one audience, not across them.
