Google Ads Channel Prioritisation for Tradie Campaigns

Google Ads Channel Prioritisation for Tradie Campaigns

Two different prioritisation rules shape tradie Google Ads accounts in 2026. At the query level, an exact match Search keyword identical to the search still wins over Performance Max. At the budget level, Google's new channel prioritisation controls decide which networks get funded first inside a campaign. If you run Search beside Performance Max, you need both.

We manage Google Ads for tradies alongside our Google Ads agency work. This guide explains Google's October 2026 channel update, the long-standing Search versus Performance Max rules, what that means when Local Services Ads are not available in Australia, and the structure, match types and measurement steps we use. Google features were checked against Google Ads Help and the Google Ads & Commerce blog on 19 October 2026.

What did Google announce on 14 October 2026?

On 14 October 2026, Google announced optional channel prioritisation and budget allocation controls across Search, Shopping, Performance Max and Demand Gen. You can label inventory as High priority or Low priority. When configured, campaigns fully fund high-priority channels (within your Target CPA or Target ROAS when you use those strategies) before spending what is left on lower-priority channels.

For Performance Max and Demand Gen, Google groups Search, YouTube, Maps, Gmail and Discover together as "Google channels". You cannot set Search above YouTube inside that bundle; Search partners and the Google Display Network can have their own priority tiers and optional daily budget caps. Google says the controls roll out globally over the coming months, at account level, campaign level and on shared budgets.

Google also flagged a February 2027 change for Search campaigns that still expand to the Display Network: to keep a similar spend split, you may need to set the Display Network to Low priority with a 50% budget allocation. That matters less for many trade accounts that run Search-only, but it is worth checking if Display expansion is still on.

When Search and Performance Max could show for the same query

Channel prioritisation steers budget inside one campaign. It does not replace Google's rules for when a Search campaign and a Performance Max campaign both match the same search. Those rules sit in ad group and asset group prioritisation and in how Performance Max interacts with other campaigns.

Google's order of preference for the same search term is:

PriorityWhat Google prefersTradie example
1Exact match keywords identical to the query (including close spell corrections)Query emergency plumber sydney and keyword [emergency plumber sydney] in Search beats Performance Max
2Phrase or broad match keywords, or Performance Max search themes, when identical to the querySearch theme "blocked drain plumber" matches that exact query ahead of a broad keyword plumber
3AI-based relevance among remaining ad groups and asset groupsGoogle picks the ad group whose keywords and landing pages best fit the intent
4Ad Rank when priorities are tiedTwo eligible groups with similar relevance: the higher Ad Rank serves

Search themes in Performance Max carry the same priority as phrase and broad match keywords in Search. Exact match that mirrors the query still comes first. Google's June 2024 query matching updates improved broad match and reporting; they did not replace this Search-versus-Performance Max order.

Important caveat from Google: a budget-limited Search campaign can still lose some auctions to Performance Max. Keep brand and your highest-intent exact match campaigns funded, and use brand exclusions or negatives on Performance Max so it is not bidding on terms you already own in Search.

What channel prioritisation changes for trade Performance Max campaigns

Most tradie Performance Max campaigns are lead gen: calls and form fills across Search, Maps, YouTube and more. Before October 2026, the main levers were assets, audience signals, search themes, negatives, brand exclusions and targets. You could see channel performance in reporting, but you could not tell the campaign to fund Search before YouTube.

The new controls add budget-level steering:

  • High versus Low priority for channel groupings. High priority channels eat the budget first (subject to your CPA or ROAS target when the campaign is not budget limited).
  • Budget allocation percentages on Low priority channels, applied on a best-effort basis, so you can cap Search partners or Display while leaving them on.
  • Performance Max grouping: Search, YouTube, Maps, Gmail and Discover move together as Google channels. To push more spend toward search inventory, you still rely on search themes, strong Search assets, URL expansion choices and separate Search campaigns for control.

Google warns that channel prioritisation alone often has little effect when Target CPA or Target ROAS campaigns are not limited by budget, because Smart Bidding may already spend across channels that meet the target. For tradies on tight daily budgets, priority tiers can matter more.

Search, Performance Max and Local Services in Australia

Australian trade businesses often ask whether Local Services Ads replace Search. As of 1 October 2026, Google's Local Services help centre did not list Australia. Tradies here typically run Google Search for intent, optional Performance Max for broader reach, and a Google Business Profile for Maps visibility. See our post on Google Local Services Ads in Australia for how we verified that.

When Local Services is not in play, overlap is almost always between your Search campaigns and Performance Max on Search and Maps inventory. The query-level rules above decide which campaign serves; channel prioritisation decides how Performance Max splits budget across its channels.

Account structure we use for tradie campaigns

Structure should make prioritisation rules easy to apply and easy to audit.

CampaignRolePrioritisation note
Brand SearchExact match on your business name and close variantsWins identical brand queries over Performance Max; keep budget adequate
Non-brand SearchExact and phrase on services and suburbs you wantExact match on high-value jobs (e.g. [roof leak repair]) before Performance Max broad themes
Performance MaxIncremental reach on Search, Maps, YouTube, Discover, Gmail, DisplayBrand excluded; search themes for gaps; review channel report after prioritisation rolls out

Split campaigns only when budgets, targets or settings need to differ. Google's own Performance Max guidance favours consolidation so the model can learn; we still separate brand Search because the business outcome and bid targets differ.

Exact match, brand controls and negative keywords

Prioritisation rewards deliberate keyword design.

  • Exact match on money terms. Put your highest-intent jobs and suburbs in Search on exact match so Google's first priority tier applies. Use phrase or broad only with Smart Bidding when you accept wider matching.
  • Brand in Search, excluded from Performance Max. Run brand on exact match in its own campaign. Apply brand exclusions or account-level negatives on Performance Max so reporting reflects new demand.
  • Shared negatives. Account-level negatives (up to 1,000) apply to Search and Shopping inventory including Performance Max. Block jobs you do not do, DIY, apprenticeships and regions you do not serve. Google's negatives do not match all close variants, so add plurals and synonyms manually.
  • Search themes as hints, not duplicates. Themes behave like phrase or broad match. Do not rely on a theme to outrank your own exact match keyword for the same query; use Search for control.

Our Google Ads audit checklist now includes an overlap check tied to these rules.

Measurement: prove Search and Performance Max are not double-counting

Prioritisation reduces auction self-competition, but your reports still need to show booked jobs.

  • One primary conversion. Bid on qualified leads or imported CRM stages, not raw form fills or phone taps. See Google Ads conversion tracking.
  • Call tracking. Dynamic numbers tie calls to campaigns and keywords. Essential when Performance Max and Search both use call assets. See call tracking.
  • Search terms and channel reports. Read Performance Max search terms and channel performance monthly. After channel prioritisation appears in your account, compare whether Low priority caps on Display or Search partners change lead mix.
  • Blended checks. Watch brand Search impression share and total cost per booked job from the CRM, not platform ROAS alone.

Google's channel performance tips remind advertisers that Performance Max optimises marginal return across channels: a weak-looking channel can still be the right place for the next dollar. Judge the campaign on total contribution.

Practical checklist for tradie accounts

  1. Map which campaigns can serve on Search for the same queries (brand Search, non-brand Search, Performance Max).
  2. Confirm exact match coverage on your top ten job types and suburbs.
  3. Exclude brand from Performance Max and fund brand Search.
  4. When Google rolls out channel prioritisation in your account, set High priority on the inventory you trust most; cap Low priority partners or Display if you test them.
  5. Reconcile leads to booked jobs weekly.
